Different ways of experiencing the world deserve thoughtful understanding.
Science, not shame.
Why the whole picture matters
The same behavior can have different reasons.
Autism can shape communication, sensory experience, social connection, routines, and everyday demands. Those patterns may look different from one person to the next, and across ages.
An assessment considers development, strengths, context, and other explanations that may overlap, including ADHD, anxiety, language differences, and learning concerns.

Paths worth exploring
This guide helps with navigation, not diagnosis. The evaluation method and setting depend on age, referral questions, location, and any documentation or test requirements.
Two settings, one approach
Virtual and in-person evaluations.
We can help identify a route that matches the referral question, rather than choosing a setting first and hoping it fits.
Virtual with Dr. Bowers
Autism evaluations may be available remotely for eligible children, teens, and adults. For virtual evaluations involving young children who are preverbal or nonverbal, the ADOS-2 is not administered remotely. For older, verbally fluent individuals, assessment methods depend on clinical circumstances. Availability depends on clinical suitability and jurisdiction.
Brighton Center for Neurodevelopment in Michigan offers in-person evaluation options for individuals in the region or willing to travel, including those who need particular face-to-face testing.
We can explore the connection without requiring you to know which diagnosis, if any, fits before you begin.
Autism + ADHD
Attention, executive functioning, sensory needs, and social differences can interact. A combined evaluation may be worth considering when both questions are present.
For children with intense demand avoidance, the familiar home environment may be less burdensome than travel to a clinic. These specialized assessments are virtual with Dr. Bowers.
Can an adult seek an autism evaluation for the first time?
Yes. Adults sometimes begin exploring autism after many years of noticing patterns or learning more about their own experiences. An evaluation can examine developmental history and current functioning while considering other explanations.
Does autism look the same in everyone?
No. Communication style, sensory experiences, relationships, routines, masking, and support needs vary considerably. The evaluation considers the individual's history and context rather than one stereotyped presentation.
Do we need an ADOS-2 to receive an autism diagnosis?
Not in every situation. Autism diagnosis is a clinical process that draws on multiple sources of information. However, an insurer, school, or program may require particular testing or documents. Confirm those requirements before choosing a virtual or in-person pathway.
Will insurance reimburse a private evaluation?
Dr. Bowers and Brighton Center are fee-for-service and do not bill insurance directly. We aim to provide clear, clinically useful documentation that families can submit when appropriate, but coverage and out-of-network reimbursement depend on the individual plan. Ask your insurer about eligible providers, prior authorization, required tests, and documentation before scheduling. Reimbursement cannot be guaranteed.
What if the main difficulty is demand avoidance?
Demand avoidance has many possible drivers. PDA is a descriptive profile rather than a separate DSM diagnosis. A PDA-focused or autism/PDA assessment can explore anxiety, development, autonomy, context, and other factors without assuming one explanation.
